If you're staring into your closet wondering what to wear for your Northern Virginia engagement session, first — breathe. You are not alone, and you do not need to buy six new outfits or match your partner like you're going to a holiday card shoot in 2007.
I've photographed couples all across Loudoun, Fauquier, Fairfax, and DC, and the engagement session outfits that consistently photograph the most beautifully in Northern Virginia aren't the most expensive or the most "Pinterest." They're the ones that feel like you, move well in the wind, and complement the place we're shooting in — a vineyard in Loudoun, a historic block in Old Town Alexandria, a wide-open Fauquier County field.
Here's how I help my couples think through it — and what's actually worked in real Northern Virginia sessions.
Start with the location, not the outfit
Before you pick a single piece of clothing, picture where we're shooting. The vibe of the place sets the tone for everything else, and your outfits should feel like a natural extension of that world — not a costume dropped into it.
A few of my favorite Northern Virginia session vibes and what tends to work:
Vineyards and rolling countryside. Think soft, earthy tones — cream, sage, dusty blue, warm caramel. Flowy dresses that catch the breeze photograph like a dream out here, especially in late afternoon light when the rows of vines glow gold.
Old Town Alexandria and historic downtowns. This is where you can lean a little more editorial. A tailored blazer, a long coat, structured shoes, richer colors like deep burgundy, espresso, or forest green. The cobblestones and brick backdrops of places like Old Town Alexandria can handle more pattern and texture than open fields can.
Open fields, overlooks, and parks. Movement is everything here. Long dresses, light layers, anything with a little drape. Avoid anything stiff — the wind is your friend and you want fabric that plays with it.
Cozy in-home or coffee shop sessions. Soft sweaters, jeans that actually fit you well, bare feet on hardwood, a robe-and-coffee morning vibe. These sessions are about intimacy, so wear things you'd actually wear on a slow Sunday.
The "coordinate, don't match" rule
The biggest outfit mistake I see is couples trying to match too literally — both in white tees and jeans, or both in the exact same shade of blue. It flattens the photos and makes you blend together instead of complementing each other.
Instead, pick a small color palette of two to four tones and pull from it. One partner might wear a cream dress with caramel accessories; the other wears a soft brown sweater and darker jeans. Same family, different notes. You'll look intentional without looking staged.
A simple trick: pick one "star" piece first — usually the dress or the standout jacket — and build the second outfit around it.
What to avoid (with love)
A few things that consistently don't photograph as well as people hope:
- Tiny stripes, busy small-scale patterns, and bold logos — they distract from your faces
- Brand-new shoes you haven't broken in (we walk a lot)
- Neon brights that cast color onto your skin in close-ups
- Anything you have to constantly tug, adjust, or worry about
If you're tugging at it in the mirror, you'll tug at it the entire session. Wear what you forget you have on.
Seasonal notes for Virginia couples
Spring. Blooms are everywhere and the light is soft. Lean into pastels, light layers, and dresses with movement. Bring a sweater for early morning sessions.
Summer. Golden hour is late and gorgeous. Breathable fabrics, lighter colors, and please — bring water. We'll chase that last hour of sun together.
Fall. My personal favorite for Virginia. The color outside is already doing so much work, so let your outfits live in warmer earth tones — rust, mustard, olive, cream, deep brown. Boots and textured knits photograph beautifully.
Winter. Cozy is the entire mood. Long wool coats, gloves, scarves, warm drinks in hand. Don't be afraid of overcast skies — they create some of the most cinematic, moody images I shoot all year.
The little details that make a big difference
The morning of your session, do these small things and you'll feel so much more put-together in front of the camera:
- Steam or iron everything the night before (yes, even the "wrinkle-free" stuff)
- Cut tags, remove stickers from shoe soles, clip loose threads
- Nails don't need to be done professionally, but clean and trimmed photograph better than chipped
- Bring a small touch-up kit: lip color, blotting paper, hair tie, safety pin
- Eat something. Hangry is not a good color on anyone.
